In the previous article, we looked at computer game design training in Germany and the Netherlands. However, it is impossible to leave out the UK, where there is plenty to choose from for those wishing to study game design.

Bachelor programs in the country are offered by several universities that have a solid track record and occupy significant places in the world educational rankings. International students are welcome here – their numbers at British technical universities are really high.

Norwich University of the Arts

The Norwich University of the Arts is famous for its modern approach to education, but the first students in its undergraduate programs appeared in 1965. The main emphasis in teaching is the ability to experiment with any idea in the learning process. A tutoring system has been developed, where older students assist first-year students in their studies.

The BA Games Art and Design program is known primarily for its practical side: it has developer status at Apple University. Students have their own modern studio with the latest software at their disposal, as well as hands-on teachers, each of whom, in parallel with teaching, is busy with their own game projects.

SAE Institute

SAE Institute is an international university with campuses in 28 countries. The London campus is located in the trendy Shoreditch area, alongside Apple and 4,000 other companies. The training is carried out in small groups of up to 30 people, and in practical classes, there are usually no more than 10 students.

BA / BSc (Hons) Game Art and Animation is a program that includes the study of the complete cycle of the game creation process, from sketching future heroes to immersing the game in 3D. Each student uses their own Wacom Intuos tablet with the latest software. The studio also has cameras for 3D motion capture.

Manchester City University

Manchester City University (Manchester Metropolitan University) is one of the largest universities in the country and is known for its high graduate employment rate. 92% of the total find work within 6 months of graduation. The emphasis here is on practice, and professional contacts with 70 companies provide the necessary professional experience for each student.

The central campus of the City University of Manchester is located in the heart of the city, with four other academic buildings on the southern outskirts.

Applicants choose between two undergraduate programs in computer game design. The BSc (Hons) Games Design and Development, BSc (Hons) Computer Games Technology program consist of the following modules:

  • Game design;
  • software development;
  • multimedia development;
  • web and mobile application development;
  • human-computer interaction.

Computer Games Technology focuses on game programming, but students thoroughly study the theoretical foundations of computer science. The program is complemented by the logic of the game and the study of the most popular programming languages.

Gloucestershire University

The University of Gloucestershire dates back to 1834, has an extensive research program and a high graduate employment rate. The university’s compact size and a small number of groups allow teachers to pay attention to each student individually.

BSc (Hons) Computer Games Design includes skills not only in computer game design but also in promoting finished products. Among the teachers, there are former Microsoft employees, Content Master and Headstrong Games, who gave preference to teaching, and therefore can transfer to students not only knowledge but also their rich professional experience.

Abertay Dundee University

The Abertay University was founded in 1888, but it keeps pace with modern technology. It was here that, for the first time in the world, a diploma in the specialty “Developer of computer games” was awarded. The university is listed in Princeton Review’s Top 25 Game Design Schools of 2015, the only one in Europe.

BA (Hons) Game Design and Production Management is a program that provides maximum participation in the practice of game creation. Among the companies with which the university cooperates are Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Microsoft, and Ubisoft. Graduates are in high demand in the gaming industry, with the most promising ones finding work even before graduation.

Abertay Dundee hosts an annual “Dare to Be Digital” student team competition. Its participants develop a new computer game in just 9 weeks.
Southampton University
The University of Southampton is ranked in the top 20 in the country and is also a member of the Russell Group. The university is known for an active and conscientious student community that is constantly involved in volunteer and environmental activities.

BA Game Design and Art consists of three parts. In the first introductory stage, work on the necessary computer programs is studied, as well as a general idea of ​​the operation of game studios and the features of the development of the game design. The second part includes research, study documentation and mastery of the skills necessary for practical work in creating games. The final stage is independent work on the selected project.

Staffordshire University

The University of Staffordshire cannot be called a qualification, however, the design program deserves attention here. Many experts consider it one of the strongest in the world; at least Alphr, a partner at PC Pro magazine, put this program at the top of the list of the top 5 computer game design programs in the UK.

BSc (Hons) Computer Game Design and Programming allows you to gain basic knowledge in 3D modeling, study existing games by reverse engineering, master C ++ and C # programming languages. In the third year, each student tries to be the leader of a development team. A selection of additional subjects is available depending on the interests of the student.
